Lauretta’s Story

Fedia and her Retinoblastoma

I first met Laurette and Haiti in one of the clinics that we were treating the poorest of the poor of Haiti. She was greatly shunned because of her massive tumor in her mouth. The villagers felt that was a voodoo curse that had been placed on Lauretta. At that point in time, I did not have a ear nose and throat physician to correct this massive problem. She’s gotten to the point that she was dying from malnutrition. She was living on a basically water and liquid vegetable diet. She really had given up. I made no promises to her, but I showed her pictures to several ear nose and throat physicians and a magnificent christian ENT doctor agreed to operate on her. Initially this was unsuccessful because of the massive trauma of the 2010 Haitian earthquake. There’s just too many critically ill people. Just over a week or so we did 254 amputations from crush injuries from this terrible Haitian earthquake. Over 250,000 people died. Our small hospital was a major recipient of many of these “crush injury“ patients. We had over 100 helicopter EMS landings at our hospital, as well as as many struggling across the Haitian border to our hospital in Jimani . Some of our Missionary heroes were able to ultimately do her surgery and you can see the before and after results. She has done wonderfully well is able to eat drink and lead to productive life. This is one of the many miracles I’ve seen in the Haitian and Dominican countries. It is through prayer and supplication that these miracles occur.
