A Mother’s Faith, A Child’s Second Chance: Nadin’s Story

For six-year-old Nadin Vickram from Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, Guyana, life has already been a journey of resilience and hope. From the time he was a baby, his mother, Sharda Jaikarran, knew something was not quite right. Doctors later confirmed that Nadin was born with Perimembranous Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) and a Sub Aortic Membrane—two serious heart conditions that placed an immense strain on his small body.

The diagnosis was devastating. For Sharda, the idea of open-heart surgery was terrifying. “This is my only child,” she said softly. “I was so worried. I didn’t want him to do the surgery.

For years, families in Guyana with children like Nadin had to travel overseas for these highly specialized surgeries, often at a cost of millions of dollars. For Sharda, this was an impossible dream. “We could never afford to go overseas to do this surgery,” she explained.

That’s why, when she learned that these life-saving procedures were being performed at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) through the partnership between Chadasha and Gift of Life International (GOLI), she finally felt hope. “I said, you know what? I believe in God. And I prayed. I thank the Lord for saving his life.

On Tuesday, August 5th, 2025, Nadin was admitted to the operating theatre at GPHC. A skilled international cardiac team, working side by side ith local doctors and nurses, performed a VSD Closure and Sub Aortic Membrane Resection.

Sharda remembers sitting in the waiting area, praying as the hours slowly passed. When the doctors emerged to tell her, the surgery had gone well, tears of relief streamed down her face. Her faith, combined with the expertise of the medical team, had carried her through.

Just days later, Nadin was sitting up in bed, smiling again. He was among the first patients to be discharged during the collaboration, a milestone that filled his mother with gratitude. “He is recovering very well. He’s much better now,” Sharda shared with a smile. “They said he will be going home today or tomorrow.”

The journey was not an easy one. Nadin, like any child, was anxious and afraid. Sharda herself was deeply emotional, torn between fear and faith. But together, with the care of compassionate nurses, the reassurance of skilled doctors, and the prayers of a hopeful mother, they made it through.

I want to thank the hospital, and especially the visiting doctors who operated on my son. I thank them so much. They gave him a second chance by giving him a new life,” she said.

Today, Nadin is back home in Herstelling, recovering with a stronger heart and a brighter future ahead of him. Sharda is more hopeful than ever, confident that her son will now have the chance to grow up, go to school, and live the healthy life she has always dreamed of for him.

Nadin’s story is more than just a successful surgery, it is a testament to the power of faith, modern medicine, and the unwavering mission of Chadasha: Saving Lives and Building Capacity in Guyana. Each mission not only changes the lives of children like Nadin but also strengthens Guyana’s healthcare system, ensuring that one day, these surgeries can be performed routinely right here at home.

One child. One family. One heartbeat at a time.
